6*6 origin

With regard to Bryce site re ACKWX, it does not answer the questions I
posed.
He may know the answers, I have corresponded with him, but did not ask the
specific question...What is the Timken T79 trasfer case built for?
and when did GM build there first commercial 6*6.

Front axle trucks ie 4wd were in production in the 1930s.

I believe i read that the tandem-drive bogie used on 6*6 (and others)
was designed by DAF in the 1930s also. I think Mack had a tandem
drive bogie system as well.

Another aspect on which listers may be able to comment, is why 6*6 format
was chosen..i think that inability of tyre-ratings at that time must
have had a lot to do with it, more so than traction..ie to carry load X,
tyres have to be rated at a certain weight.
