RE: [MV] Towing an M38A1

With all due respect, it is not a good idea to disconnect the rear drive
shaft of a M38 A1 because of the use of the shaft as the axle of the drum of
the hand break and the difficulty of adjustment of this hand brake when the
shaft is disturbed. The M38A1 had a "GI" tow bar and the manual never
mentioned either drive shaft disconnection. The use of a free running flange
or of locking hubs would destroy the ability of the M 38 A1 to drive in
relatively deep water with the snorkel of the air intake and exhaust and
still have operational brakes..

Hi,
It's probably best to disconnect the rear drive shaft and use
locking hubs in the "free" mode on the front. Some folks have also made
special free running flanges for the front axles. Make sure your wheel
bearings are well lubed and the steering joints are all well lubed too.
If no top, put windshield in the down position and make sure you don't
have any loose gear in the jeep itself.
