Thanks to all who responded about the jeep CJ2A. I have passed this info on
to the owner. I am a lot smarter about the older jeeps now.

The owner has just told me that the original owner was the forestry service.
The do-dad on the steering column has something to do with taking distance
measurements in a scale other than miles. (I will have to go take some
pictures of this thing)
