it is very possible for the big air piston to be rusted in the bore of
the air pack. of all the working ones i have taken apart, never has
there been one that looked even close to being in good condition. you
need to compare the braking power with no air, to the braking with air.
if your hand brake is functioning properly it will lock up the rear
wheels. this will give you a little safety factor. now open the
emergency valve in the rear (passenger side) this will dump air from the
main tank and also prevent air pressure buildup. open the service valve
and use brakes until all air is gone from second tank. ( there is a
check valve between the tanks, so even if your gauge shows no air you
may have air pressure in second tank ) i have often seen these valves
rusted away. leave both valves open and drive slowly in open area and
try brakes. this will be with no power assist. next close both valves
and build up air. 120 lb., right? try brakes now and compare. report
results..........
