Hi Mark:
Is the reason the insurance company is writing the car off the policy
because :

    1) the vehicle no longer being able to meet Canadian laws about the
windshield being damaged and cannot be operated on public ways

    2) you made a claim to get the windshield replaced and they balked at
the cost (i.e. replacement cost $7000 Canadian or whatever) and are
declaring the car 'Totaled which means it has a Scrap title now?

    3) you made a claim and they said " Bullet Resistant Windshield
?????!!!!!!! Why do you need a bullet resistant Windshield on your BMW 728?
The car is ARMORED????? Wait a minute here. What exactly are we insuring for
$130 a month? Are you James Bond or something? Who are you and what do you
do for a living that would require yada, yada, yada"

    4) You told them up front that this wasn't no 'ordinary' BMW 728 and
they happily took your $130 a month anyway. But now they won't pay.

    5) You told them up front that this wasn't no 'ordinary' BMW 728 and
they said no problem, you get it appraised and we'll insure it for actual
cash value and charge you $536.30 a month. Now are blowing you off after 7
months because you need $7K for a cracked windshield and they realize it
ain't a garaged classic only taken out on special occasions.

Insurance companies are whores, but a necessary evil. They only bet on
sure things. Paying them for insurance coverage is like betting against the
house in a casino. You win once and a while, but the odds are on their side

I try to avoid pitfalls when dealing with my insurance company by going
for absolute minimums required by the law. My state motor vehicle bureau
decided my M35A2 is a pickup when I registered it. My agent doesn't have a
clue what it is other than it is made by Kaiser Jeep and it has ANTIQUE
plates. If I get in an accident, I will be left hanging in the wind and will
probably lose my house. BUT if I patiently explained I was driving a vehicle
that the US GOVERNMENT determined was too expensive to maintain
economically, my insurance company would wonder what shape it was in when it
cost Uncle Sugar $80K to buy in 1968 and I bought it 31 years later for
$1500. They would wonder how I was going to maintain it and what corners I
would be cutting to get it on the road. And FINALLY, what type of risk I was
posing to THEIR financial well being. No way they would write it if I was
totally upfront. The insurance company wrote it cause it had a LEGAL, REAL
Form 97 which said it could be operated on the highways of the US,
recognized by the US DoT and a few others. If the crap hits the fan, their
legal staff will wiggle them out somehow.
My risks are high, but I am a big boy and am making an informed judgment
that I CAN maintain and operate this vehicle safely. Once the M35A2's out
there start to crank up a history of accidents and deaths due to poor
maintenance by uninformed buyers, we will see the agency owners and
insurance companies start to scrutinize their records and start to suspend
our coverages.
First time a "legally" registered and insured HMMWV owner makes a
medical claim under his accident insurance for head injuries due to non
padded dashboard, well forget all the funny titles ya'll paid for, you'll be
parking them for lack of insurance.
Big can of worms...Don't ask, don't tell. If it's green and you want to
play with it and don't mind taking a chance, go for it. But don't expect to
get reimbursed for pulling a quickey on the Insurance companies. They have
DEEP pockets and BIG legal staffs. They'll distance themselves from you in a
heartbeat if they can can find a loophole, which they will. They are nothing
more than legal bookies....
We have to use them because the prostitutes we call 'elected' officials
know what is best for us. Like taking away our weapons so 'WE' can be safe.
Or is it 'THEY' will be safe from us in the future?
