starting long sitting engines............ assuming they were in good
condition when parked. pull plugs and oil cylinders with penetrating
oil. there is a school of thought that excess oil on ring area will
result in carbon which will cause poor ring performance. remove valve
covers and pour oil down push rods to lube cam which will be dry. run
oil pump by removing dist and spinning oil pump drive if possible or
hook up external oil pump to main oil galley. after you have oil
pressure turn engine several times by hand to be sure there is nothing
stuck, like valves. at this time you really don't want to break
something. with the plugs out is also a good time to check for spark. i
have started engines that have sat for 25 years or more and the oil
either is just not there or has turned into dry crusty deposits. when
ready to start engine and assuming it starts, immediately upon oil
pressure run engine at least at 2000 rpm for 3 - 5 minutes. this is
critical to throw oil around in engine to lube the many things that are
splash lubed. do not let engine sit and idle, this is especially very
bad for a new or rebuilt engine, get the rpm up immediately. if this
were a diesel, same applies, but if turbo disconnect oil feed pipe and
oil turbo. if gas motor the carb probably will not co-operate. the best
solvent for cleaning old deposits from inside carb is probably m.e.k. ,
or lacquer thinner.
