Probably same reasons initially most tanks used gas powered engines ->
availability of fuel (i.e. gas stations), compatibility of fuel with
other vehicles, lighter weight, and less smoke. The Germans never
fielded a domestic tank design which used a diesel engine, although they
did make some attempts during development of various models. During the
1930s diesel engine technology was not on a par with gas engines and
therefore not as flexible when specs were drawn up.
