i always start out in 2nd/high unless i have a heavy load, or am
starting out up a steep hill. you don't need to or want to slip the
clutch doing this. the adjustments of the injection pump have a big
bearing on how well your truck 'takes a load' you should be able to just
let the clutch out in second without adding any fuel, and then apply
power. i have encountered trucks that acted like they had no guts at
all, especially when cold. this always turned out to be the droop
adjustment in the pump.
