re: #2 I think that you will find that most, if not all, are considered
war memorials by the governments of the island groups that govern
them. One of the researchers in my department at FSU did some geochemical
research in Palau. They also went to some of the surrounding islands to
sight see. They were told not to touch ANYTHING. no matter how small, from
any of the beaches or battlefields they went to.
