I would strongly recommend that you do not use epoxy or 'glass resin unless
you can seal the entire surface. You are better off using some penetrating
wood preservative, then prime it with slightly thinned oil base primer,
then topcoat it with two coats of latex paint tinted to match. That should
be good for 20+ years if done properly. Assuming you don't wear the paint
off. You can't beat latex over wood. Use 100% Acrylic Latex. The best
stuff is about $25/gallon, way cheap compared with Urethanes. If you seal
the wood up with epoxy and water gets inside, the epoxy will be fine, but
the wood will rot from the inside out. The other system I mentioned above
will let the wood breath enough to avoid rot from the inside out.
