Military vehicle collector ready to take on town

(EXCERPT) Homeowner told to remove troop carrier from yard, by Michael King Post-Crescent staff writer

TOWN OF MENASHA — Gary Dorschner’s love of military vehicles has him going to battle with his town’s leaders once again.

A 1952 Army troop carrier on his front lawn at 901 Mayer St. has been targeted by Town of Menasha police for removal and by some neighbors for complaints.

“If they demand it of me, clean up the whole town,” he said. “Don’t just pick on me.”

Some say the property — also home to another 13 cars and trucks parked in the back yard — is an eyesore. Others defend his right to keep the vehicles as he pleases.

One neighbor, Jim Pilarski, 1000 Mayer St., says he has complained to police about the “ongoing problem” for at least five or 10 years. “I know it’s a free society and everything, but why junk the neighborhood up with eyesores?” Pilarski said.

The issue comes to a head Thursday when Dorschner, 52, a truck driver and vehicle collector, faces a municipal court trial for violating an ordinance against parking a commercial vehicle in a residential area.
