a number of years ago in popular mechanics they ran a small blurb type
info spot on the salvaging of pre 1945 wrecks to get the steel for some
sort of sensitive particle counter.the article stated that the steel
making prosess after 1945 and later was picking up background
contamination.this was an unavoidable by product of the detonation of
nuclear devices.if i recall right nothing can stop the absorption during
the smelting and purifing prosess.this makes the steel very slightly
radioactive and useless in a very sensitive device.wrecks sunk with
steel made prior to a and h bombs have practically no radiactivity to
throw off the measuring counters.hope this is not out of date
information,just what i remember.mike power
