The use of pre-atomic age steel for shielding s true. Back in about 1963 there
was a facility at MIT called the KOBIFAC (+/-) which was used for counting the
emissions from radioactive calcium (and possibly other things) in the human
body. The calcium count gave an indication of lean body weight for SCUBA
divers, among other things. The chamber was built of battleship armor, as I
remember.

Most of the stuff on the surface has long been scrapped, hence the interest in
sunken wrecks.
