I have copies of several reports concerning the transmission in the G-749 series trucks. There were numerous transmission failures (and some sprag failures) in the early models of these vehicles (many of which were shipped to Korea). This no doubt was cause for the bad rep these trucks earned early on.

However, the transmission was redesigned, and as the trucks were repaired, the transmissions modified accordingly. A new model number was even applied to the new transmission. Later reports indicated that the trucks with the improved transmissions were actually more reliable than the CCKW or the G-744 5 tons.

Today, these trucks are still held in disdain by many because of these early failures, or because later owners have not taken the time to operate and maintain them properly. Civilians tend to think these are either Allision transmissions (nope) or regular turbohydramatics (nope again), or forget they are liquid cooled, and allow them to freeze.

The likelihood of finding one of these trucks today with an original-type transmission is remote.

David Doyle
