Shipping heavy stuff as a group--cheap?

Good evening all.
I had a though this evening as I pondered how to truck parts across America
at a reasonable price. Here's what I came up with.

Is there enough interest, and patience, for us list members to have an
actual organized effort to ship heavy items via truck to predetermined
locations near helpful yet gullible list members homes. For example, I live
near Columbia SC and could assist people living with in a couple hours drive
of Columbia to round up and deliver items to a trucking company in Columbia.
I could also pick things up at above trucking company and keep at my home
until list member X could drop by and pick up. In turn I could hope to ship
stuff to a city near the home of someone else on the list that could do the
same for member Y. Perhaps we could even ship several things on one pallet
if a couple of people in a given state what to. I wouldn't mind driving an
hour or two to pick up some heavy item I have bought or traded here on the
list if it saved me some big money. I think shipping cost often keep us
from buying stuff. Time is the other concern. Again I wouldn't mind a good
cheap cargo cover sitting at your place of business for a few weeks until
you had something else coming my way.

So, is it potential here, or am I talking from my butt? Is truck shipping
expensive?

Regardless, if anyone does need help in the central SC area, let me know.
Just don't expect me to pick stuff up from GL. It's just too big a pain in
the butt. Those guys are just too hard to work with. I'm sure most of you
know what I mean.
