In North America, I think the NATO type plug came into common use with the
introduction of the CUCV. There are two-pin adapters that plug into the end
of the NATO slave cable which allow you to slave-start the older vehicles,
but I've not seen any available for quite some time. The cables themselves
are great. At work I have a gigantic 45 ft. long one for slave-starting
stuff in the middle of inaccessibly mucky fields, and the smaller 15-20ft.
type for the back of my 1009 for when I have to jumpstart stuff on set (with
the two-pin adapter handy, of course.)

I've seen some M35s come out with the NATO type slave receptacle instead of
the two pin, but it looks as though it was a field mod rather than something
done at the factory. Naturally all the CUCVs and HMMWVs are the NATO type
plug.

In terms of current-handling, I have a few of the two pin cables and
receptacles which are fairly nasty looking through arc burns acquired
through a combination of heavy current and poor fit, but have yet to see
that happen with any of the NATO-type equipped stuff. Probably why they
changed if it wasn't simply just a matter of NATO standardization.
