Dear All ,
Alternator warning lights that glow are often a sign that
there is a fault in the rectifier pack .The alternator is a three phase
machine and the pack is an assembly of 9 diodes , 3 positive going , 3
negative going and 3 warning light , if one of the warning light ones starts
to fail the lamp will glow . More revs, more volts , more glow . That's the
easy bit as the assembly on most units is not supposed to be repairable .
First check the output voltage is correct then put a digital multimeter set
on amps in line with the warning light circuit . Turn on the ignition switch
and you should show current drawn by the bulb AND polarity. Start engine ,
the reading will decrease to almost zero and the bulb go out , if the
reading starts to rise with reversed polarity and the bulb glows then 1 or
more have failed .
IF the alternator is otherwise sound you may choose to ignore this annoying
trait , or you can replace the pack or the whole alternator .
BUT if you are competent in the field of electronics {or have someone who
is } then it is possible to replace the faulty diodes , and save loads of
money .
The above is general info that applies to most machines .

good luck happy new year to all Noel
