Why the Deuce M35A2 Engine/Trans Adapter Plate?

Hi Listers...

I was under my multifuel deuce yesterday. I never noticed before, but
there is an adapter plate between the engine and transmission.

Why wasn't the transmission designed to bolt directly to the engine?
