HELP! Deuce Gears Stripped...Is It the Transfer Case or Transmission?

Hi Listers...

The tranny on my M35A2 has been getting kinda loud and stinking of
gear oil over the past couple of months (since I used it to haul the
Cub Scout pack up to the Pony Tracks tank museum for a guided tour). I
changed the GO in my trans and xfer case several months back and the
GO in both is still full and looks clear and feels thick. It appeared
OK before the change, albeit a bit dirty.

Today while I was driving, I got a green light and tried to start out,
but instead of moving, the gears made a loud "ZZZZZZZZZZZZ!" that
sounded like a gear had completely stripped, and the deuce wouldn't
move. It was trying really hard to move, but would only catch a tiny
bit and would jump forward an inch or so and then would stop, and the
"ZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZ" noise would start again.

No matter which gear I selected on the shift lever (1 through 5 and
reverse), or which position I set the transfer case lever to (high or
low), it just made the same grinding noise and would slightly try to
move the wheels before cutting loose with the "ZZZZZZZZZZZZZZ" sound.

The gear shift and transfer case lever are NOT popping out of gear.
They remain fully engaged while this sound happens.

I checked the drive shafts and jack shaft and all appear to be intact
and flange bolts are tight.

I feathered the power very slowly and eventually got the drivetrain
and gears to catch just enough to back it into a parking lot, but
there's no way it will allow me to put any torque on the drive without
it making that noise and disconnecting all useful power from the
wheels.

What does this sound like...is it the transmission, or the transfer
case? How do I determine which one it is so I can order the
appropriate parts or assemblies for repair?

Oh, yeah, and does any generous lister have a deuce on the San
Francisco peninsula that they would use to help out a fellow lister in
need tow his deuce back from Burlingame to Belmont? I have a medium
towbar...all I need is another deuce and a generous driver for 30
minutes.

Thanks!
