When towing the deuce or 5 ton let the towing company do it their way. If you
tell them what to do and they damage your truck doing it they will pass you
the blame. The wheel lift like Everette stated is the most popular but some
companies still tow via the front bumper and chains to the axle. The device
that hooks to the lifting shackles is called a whiffle tree and is used
exclusively by the military. When the military lift tows using the whiffle tree they
also use axle clamps and attach a tow bar to the front axle and to the pintle of
the towing vehicle. The tow bar keeps the vehicle in place and the crane tied
to the whiffle tree keeps the truck suspended.
