Brian, I think what you are considering in a portable stereo has already
been well engineered, and works quite effectively. There is a unit that
is completely self contained, running on battery power (rechargeables
work very well). High power amplification with connections for
headphones, and an internal CD plus radio. My kids call it a "boom box." :-)
