As I understand it the early ones can be pretty week, thus the bad rep..
There are newer parts and aftermarket parts that can really strengthen them.
A number of shops will do rebuilds with beefier parts. Like this one
http://www.fourthgearinc.com/.
The Diesel page has a pretty good two part write of 700R4 improvements that
fourthgear did. http://www.thedieselpage.com/reviews/lee700r4-1.htm and
http://www.thedieselpage.com/reviews/lee700r4-2.htm One of these days I
hope to have an M-601, I plan on putting a 4BT and a Beefed 700R4 in it. In
the mean time, when I get a M1008, I would put a beefy on in that too. Lokar
makes a tranny mount 700R4 Floor Shifter and E-Brake Kit that looks
Identical to the old dodge power wagon shift levers.

No real difference in beds unless there are holes from trim or the second
gas tank door. Bedsides can be unbolted! I'm saving a 700R4 here just in
case I end up with an M1008. They really get a bad rap. I had 250,000 on
one in an
84 1/2 tom with a 6.2 and it worked just fine.
