bjorn is right, the flanges need to be there to support the axle shaft.
there is only a short bushing in the inner end of the spindle and none
in the axle tube so all the weight would be on that one bushing and it
would certainly do it no good to be moving around that way. also the
original drive flanges are only heat treated and not all that hard that
they cannot be easily machined and they will still support the axle
while allowing it to turn in the flange with a small amount of grease.
it has been fairly ease to find spare flanges and it cost me $15 to have
a pair machined which is why i gave kenny a pair for his last trip from
here. oh, by the way, while the 3208 and 3204 may not be caterpillars
best effort, they are certainly not throw away engines. cat has a large
rebuilt shop in texas that remans them and they will run for hundreds of
thousands of miles if taken care of.
