Do what apb recommends, but likely you have a bad solenoid.
At least it's an easy engine to work on =)

Verne, it sounds like you need to some simple electrical tests with a test
lamp (24-volt, remember) or a volt meter. The starter button operates a
small relay, I think, mounted on the firewall. That relay, in turn, operates
the starter solenoid. The button should be checked for 24 volt output, then
the intermediate relay checked, then the solenoid. Somewhere along this
circuit, juice ain't gettin where it oughta be.
