Just watched a fascinating local news item on Normandie ce Soir.

On 4th July 1944 the GI's celebrated in the shattered villages just inland
from Omaha Beach such as Grandcamp Maisy, Vierville etc by dihing out
sweets, food and goodies to the locals who had returned to their shattered
homes. The footage also showed these French people laying flowers on the
temporary graves. Their obvious grief conttrasted with the enthusiasm for
giving that the GI's showed in the film, these people were pretty poor
before 6th June, in many cases they had absolutly nothing.

Apparently the Memorial Museum in Caen has a collection of hitherto unseen
footage of D Day and onwards though the next 80 days.

We will be attending the memorial next Sunday at Hill 112 (
www.hill112.com) 60 years on from the battle for this vital piece of high
ground.
