Yes, that's a reasonable assumption. Recip aircraft engines have a
moderate compression ratio and crank out about 1/2 HP per cube running
on 100 octane low-lead avgas. The reason is reliability...lower strain
on the engine. This goes back to to 1930's. More modern metallurgy may
have allowed an increase in that, but I've been away from aviation for
the past 6 years, so I can't be certain.
