M101 Brakes

hello all -- i have just rejoined the mil-veh list, having been on it several years ago. My MV is a 1967 M715 w/ow

I have an M101 3/4 ton trailer, that I tow behind my pickup as a utility trailer. It has 12" hydraulic surge brakes. What I am thinking of doing, and hope to find someone who has tried this, is to replace the hyraulic brakes (and backing plate) with 12" electric brakes, keeping the original hub and drum.

It looks like the M101 has standard-size backing plate mounting bracket (square plate on axle tube end), so I am pretty sure electric backing plate would mount up -- but would brake pads contact the drum at proper location??

Anybody tried/thought of this? Might it work??

Thanks,
