Neil,
Sounds like you have the commercial "V" band clamps, and they will require that the flanges almost touch. The military "V" band clamps are the wide base (throat) and they will wrap around with approximately 1/4" of space between the flanges. But...they are hard to find.

I will check and see if I have any spares.
