I considered volunteering locally to help clean up stuff, but the hard part
is organization. Someone has to tell us where to go and what to do. I know
it is a real job just coordinating everything. My M35 is also a dump truck
so it would be very useful, but it's hard to make a long trip with such a
slow machine.

My suggestion would be to let your local Red Cross and other agencies know
what you have and let them know you can help. I called the Red Cross last
year and talked with them about the equipment I own. The only thing they
were actually interested in was my 8000 watt generator. Of course we had a
lot of tornadoes here in SC yesterday and they have asked for volunteers to
help with clean up. If I can work it out I will do that later in the week,
but since I have already missed 3 days of work this week (holiday, rain,
rain) I need to work the next 3 days to get caught up. That's part of the
problem. The people with the most to offer (equipment) are usually the
busiest after a natural disaster.

The fact is the National Guard has lots of 6 X 6 trucks. The real trick is
to get involved with a relief organization that knows you and will know of a
way to put you to work. Over the years I have had to opportunity to help
with two disaster relief projects. Once with a church group. Over a
hundred of use from SC went to Albany GA and helped clean up after a flood
maybe 10 years ago. The other time my employer organized a group of us to
go and clean up trees here in SC after HUGO went through. I wish I had the
deuce back then. It would have been very useful.

With this in mind, if anyone out there is part of a group that is organizing
a relief effort, post a note here if any of us can help. I have observed,
in this messed up world we all live, that you guys out there are some of the
most helpful and generous people I have been around for quite some time. I
hope no one is getting teary eyed :-)

PS. At our Church a few months ago we all filled out a Red Cross survey in
which we listed all the equipment we owned that might be helpful for
disaster relief as well as our experience and expertise. Has anyone else
done anything like that?
