Several years ago I had a customer that rebuilt automobile parts, water
pumps, master cylinders and other things. This was at the time most of
these items were cast iron and steel. After the old units were disassembled
they were put into a heated caustic solution to remove and paint, grease,
rust, etc. before they were rebuilt. He was having a problem with surface
rust after cleaning. I made and sold him a liquid consisting of a light
mineral sprits, in which was non-detergent engine oil at the rate of one
quart of 10 weight oil to every 5 gallons mineral spirits. They would dip
baskets of parts in this and they would be safe from rust until such time as
they were reassembled. They were not cleaned of this coating before or
after the reassembly was complete and if repainting was necessary they were
painted again without cleaning the coating off. We experimented with adding
methanol alcohol to absorb water to the solution but no improvement was
noted so that was discontinued.

This would not be hard to replicate if someone wanted to use to prevent
rust. It will not stand up for outside storage, but was fine for extended
inside storage.
