Souping up a MUTT

FWIW,
A friend of mine that has been working on all types of vehicles all his life had a customer that
wanted a MUTT restored. So he restored the MUTT, then the customer wasn't happy with the
performance of the engine, so he asked the mechanic to see if he could improve the performance
without greatly modifying the jeep.
The first modification was to add a K&N air filter per instructions by Ron Rietfors at:
http://www.muttmotorpool.com/StageoneMOD.html
The modified filter added a little pep but not that much, so the next mod was to the exhaust system.
They didn't do the headers but increased the pipes to 2", the maximum size that would fit through
the hole in the rear of the jeep. The increased aspiration seemed to help quite a bit more so the
next mod was to the engine.
The head was shaved .030 and the cam was reground to provide .030 more valve lift. Although there
was an improvement in performance it wasn't as great as expected.
Overall performance was determined by the speed of the MUTT up a long grade while the accelerator
pedal was floored. Before mods the speed was almost 45MHP after the aspiration mods the speed was
between 50 and 55 MPH. After the engine mod the speed was almost 60.
