It is VVSS. The springs are arranged vertically, which means they
have those big cast bogey assemblies with those flanges on them that
run vertically for stiffness. HVSS bogeys don't have those vertical
stiffeners. It also looks like it has the T54E1 tracks.

Here's a comparison of model kit VVSS suspension sets.
http://www.perthmilitarymodelling.com/reviews/vehicles/misc/vvss/vvss.htm

Early Vertical Volute suspension components had the track return
rollers on top of the bogey assembly. The later ones had it on the
back with a spring.

The other easy way to tell is that the Vertical Volute suspension had
single wheels in between the guide horns that were on the end
connectors of the tracks. The Horizontal Volute suspension had 4
wheels per bogey (2 inside and 2 outside) that ran to either side of
the track horns that were in the center of the track links
themselves. The HVSS was wider and that required the extended fenders
that projected out from the sides of the welded hulls on the M4A3
E8s. HVSS tracks have a space in the middle for the center guide horn.

Good set of photos of E8s with a pair of close ups of the HVSS and
VVSS bogeys in the article.
