Yeah, you NEVER, EVER wanna use silicone, RTV, etc on a carb...get new
gaskets.

Your problem was almost surely the gasket, since the symtoms that you described were not those of a stuck needle valve. You no doubt reused the old gasket after taking the carb off and putting it back on. If you start having the problem again, do as Caleb suggests and also get a new gasket.
