Screams

Hi Bill,
I will return to Texas the 1st of May for R&R from this job. I will check
the u-joints. The transmission shifts ok, the clutch feels ok. The truck
seems to roll ok, although I only drove it one time. Jeff, the previous
owner makes his living as a contractor with quite a bit of old equipment
and he keeps it up well. He sold this truck to buy one that is more road
worthy, rather than off-road capable. I knew of the problem as we have
talked about it and he could not locate it. If all else fails I have
another 5 ton with a damaged bed to swap the dump bed to.
This is "working" equipment. I have an old crane that I plan to dig some
small lakes on my property and use the fill for my roads and building
sites.
Since the truck will not be on the road, if I can't find the trouble, I may
just run it till it stops and fix whatever falls out...
Of course, I will try every way I can to find the trouble.
Thanks,
Earl

p.s. Thanks for the lead on the parts.

Hi Earl,

Have you checked the universal joints?

I thought my transmission had quit last spring and it turned out to be the
universal joints between the transmission and transfer case.

The BEST price I found for them was with Ted Hils and I believe that he is
on this list. Locally they wanted over $130 each for the U-joints. Teds
price was about a fourth of that price if I remember correctly. I've never

met Ted and have no other connection with him. I am delighted with the
quality and of course the price.

He also advertises in the various MV magazines as Teds Trucks and Stuff. I

think he also has a web site but can't remember the URL.

Other venders also gave me prices that were very close but could not
provide
all of the U-joints at that time (There are three sizes of them on the
truck).

The U-joints between the transfer case and transmission are fairly large.
The rest in the drive train are the middle size and the ones on the winch
shaft are the smallest. I hope that is correct, going from memory and I
sometimes forget where I left my memory.

Does the transmission shift okay? Are there oil leaks under the
transmission? I think that if you can shift okay and no serious leaks you
should have an okay transmission. But, be warned, I am no expert on
transmissions and am only guessing here.

Hope this helps or at least gives you somewhere else to look.
