Hi!
Did you remember to unplug the pink wire from the top of the injection pump
before starting to prime filter? If not, it can cause a vapor lock which
will be a pain in the axx.

Subject: [MV] CUCV Bumm'n me out!

Good Morning Gentleman

You may remember my M1009 quit running right before Christmas, without
rehashing all the SNAFU's, I ended up installing a take out hummer
engine, and getting the transmission rebuilt, being on a severe budget
this has taken me a while to accomplish. Got her all together last
night, filled all the necessary fluids, double checked bolts for
tightness, re-installed hood.

I got up this morning hooked my M35A2's batteries to the cucv's
batteries, and started to bleed the fuel system. I left the fuel filter
off, while I cranked her, and got a big stream that reached as far as
the radiator. Good! I installed the filter, un hooked the shut off
solenoid, and cranked her over a few times to fill the injector pump. I
cranked her over 10 revolutions and noticed a little smoke up near the
firewall near the fuel filter. I couldn't tell exactly were it cames
from, so I got my wife to turn the truck over while I watched for smoke,
I also cracked #1 injector open and had her hold full throttle as she
cranked it.

I saw smoke from where all the wiring harness's connectors are next to
the fuel filter so I jumped up on the truck and started sorting through
the wiring spaghetti, and found a scorch mark on the flat braided
grounding strap, but couldn't find any hot or burnt areas on any of he
wiring harnesses that were on top of it...hmmmmm.. I noticed at the same
time I saw the smoke from the grounding strap that there was some smoke
comming from the small ground wire that comes off the batteries NEG
cable and is bolted to the right of the radiator (all grounding wire
bolts are tight).

I picked up the wiring harnesses off of the grounding strap, thinking
that would cure my ills. Continued trying to bleed the injectors, but
wasn't getting as much fuel as I thought there should be, if we cranked
for 7 revolutions or less usually didn't get any smoke 7-10 we got
smoke. I'm assuming this means I have a dead short somewhere...DOH!! and
current is flowing back through the grounds, at one point we cranked too
long and melted the insulation off of the small negative terminal wire
that bolts next to the radiator!

I believe I have 2 problems here, obviously an electrical problem..but
I have no way to check ohms, amps, volts, I'll probably have to find
somebody who does, or take it to a shop. Another interesting and
possibly related piece of information is that when attempting to start /
turn over the engine the Glow plug/Water light never lit up! My glow
plugs don't work, but the lights always did, I didn't touch any of the
relay's wires so have no idea why this is occurring, but will bet
somehow it's all related.

The second problem is I'm getting drips of fuel at the injectors
instead of streams, I just replaced the fuel sensor (I new Stu would
bring this up) but no change, maybe if I could crank her over longer,
but due to the smoke issue I decided to quit before I lost all the
"magic smoke" and it refused to play anymore. One other thing, I got
under the vehicle while being cranked, and saw no smoke coming from the
starter area, I thought maybe one of the hot wires was touching the
block or heat shield but I don't believe it is. I'm dead in the water at
this point, so I can use all the advise/suggestions that you might have,
feel free to contact me off or on list.

Thanks - Tom
