Well, I can't speak for all diesel civvy trucks, but all the Ford, GM
and Dodge diesel trucks I've ever seen had 2 batteries to get things
spinning. My Dodge Cummins has 2 batteries. Of course your milage
may differ, but I'm pretty sure you have to have dual batteries to get
that starter to spin fast enough.
