I'm looking at the back of my Calif Class A non-commercial license.
It says, "71. CL. A RESTRICTED TO TOWING TRAILER COACHES ONLY, NOT FOR
COMPENSATION - NOT FOR CL. 8 VEHICLES"
Oh, well. I reckon this license doesn't allow me to drive a deuce? You
might want to ask the DMV why they require a Class A license for a deuce but
not for a 3-axle diesel pusher motor home that's longer and sometimes
heavier than a deuce.

That's right. The weight is either 6,000 or 9,000 pounds IIRC (I'd have
to look up the correct weight), but in any case, the limit is well under
the weight of a wet, naked deuce. California's vehicle code is worded
such that a class A or class B commercial driver's license is needed to
legally operate a 2.5-ton 6x6 here, without any regard for how the truck
will be used (i.e., commercial hauling or recreational joy-rides), or
even how it is licensed (i.e., having Historical Vehicle plates doesn't
affect the licensing requirement).
