I don't know what kind of fan motor, but some do have a ground.
If it has only one wire, check with an ohm meter between the wire
and the bare case of the motor, or a screw coming off of it. you
should get a low ohms reading like 1-5 ohms. If this works and is
hooked up, check for voltage between the case of the motor itself
and the chassis ground. Could it not be grounded?
