We use a GIS database here at work which it's main purpose is mapping
roads, freeways, pipelines, elevation, facilities, areas, habitats, etc.
In the last couple of years they've got corporate subscriptions to
various aerial photo databases. This tool has proved invaluable working
in rural areas without any existing maps, and I also use it in Urban
areas from time to time if the developers drawings are sloppy or
nonexistent. It's also handy to look at places like tower park in super
high res... Or check out areas that we're going to play wargames in and
see if there's enough trails to bring my jeep. Usaphotomaps are one of
the better services. When I can get photos out of our system at 6" per
pixel or even 2" per pixel, I use this system rather than some freebe on
the net. 2" per pixel is enough to make people out in a swimming pool,
but not the gender. Incredible technology.
