My point is that the newer software is bloated an inefficient. Minicomputers, like
those from DEC, DG, and others, ran functional word processors and spread sheets
with 10,000 times less resources than current machines. My first computer had
less than 32K of memory and a tiny hard disk. My current machine 10,000 times
more, but does nothing like 10,000 more. If it did, it would answer email while I
sleep.

My dad used to say that an engineer can do for $1 what any fool can do for $1000
(numbers updated for inflation). That's why I appreciate WW II engineering, but
disdain much of the modern work that requires such bloated resources. Also, are we
really better off because kids play video games, rather than working on engines?
What does a video game really prepare you for? Is an 'experiment' done on a
computer REALLY an experiment?? GIGO.

FWIW,
-John
