Cutting a Transmission Input Shaft

Here's a question for all you metalurgists and welders. I have an extra input
shaft from a deuce transmission. I want to cut the gear portion off. Is there
anyway to temper the steel with heat so that I can cut it with my bandsaw? I
know I can chop it with the heat wrench but prefer the cleaner cut of the saw.
