Subject: [MV] CUCV Front End Noise
I've been driving my truck lately and am hearing a noise/vibration from
what I believe is the front end. It is an intermittent type of
roar/hum. The noise is speed variable, it increases as I speed up and
decreases when I am driving slowly. It almost sounds like a flat spot
on one of the tires. The noise goes away if I can hit a series of bumps
correctly with the drivers side wheel. (I got really board on a 3 hour
drive home last night). The noise dramatically increases in speed
during engine braking yet becomes more quiet. I realize that this is
one of those "mysterious" things to try and describe over the internet
but I was hoping for suggestions. Could it be U joins in the rear drive
shaft (as I'm running in 2wd with the front hubs dis-engaged)? Could it
be the front wheel bearings? How do I check the front wheel bearings
short of replacing them, can I just jack up the front end and push/pull
on the tires to see if they wobble - then rotate to check for binding?
I'm trying to figure out which direction the wind is blowing in right
now so I can decide where to piss my money away without ending up with
it all over my pants (catch my drift?)
