Mark:

The only proof that any financial instrument is genuine and honored by its
originating
institution is time. If it's issued by a U.S. institution, you can contact
that institution
(bank, credit union, etc.). Even postal money orders have their problems
when dealing
with non U.S. issuers. Not all countries are members of the international
treaty on
postal money orders. When dealing with a foreign entity, wait at least a
month after
you deposit the instrument in your bank. If it bounces, you'll be out a few
bucks in
your local bank's fees, but you'll avoid getting stung for the big amount.

Also, us the email list to ask about a potential buyer. In this day of
scams, it's perfectly
acceptable to ask the list if anyone has had dealings with the person
offering you
payment for an item, and ask further if the deal went OK.

Whatever you do, don't fall for the scam where someone offers to send you a
larger
payment than the cost of the item plus shipping and asks you to send the
change right
away. That's an all-too-common scam.

As for the auction places, watch out for winning an item at a cheap price,
then getting
hit for shipping costs that would buy you a dozen of what you just won.

Good luck and be very careful out there,

Dick

Subject: [MV] Protecting Yourself from Counterfit Checks

I'm in the process of selling a truck and would like
to know how to protect myself from fake cashier's
checks or money orders, etc. What I'm dealing with is
in the $7000 range. In the past I usually insist on
cash, but I always run in the question of checks. Is
there a way to protect yourself? Can a bank determine
up front if the check is valid. I had once heard that
even if it is a cashier check, the bank I deposit it,
still wants a few days to see if it clears.

Thanks
Mark
