Re: Couple of five ton Qs

Blaine,
The 5t has a sprag. Different than a deuce sprag, because the 5t has
a neutral position, as well. With no air pressure, the sprag is in
neutral and the front end freewheels. The tranny either sends pressure
to one side of a spring-centered (neutral) piston or the other,
depending on what direction the tranny is in. The piston either engages
the forward going sprag or the rearward going sprag, or neutral, should
the compressor fail.
To check to see if the sprags and air solenoids are all working,
build up pressure and shut down the engine. Jack up one front corner so
the tire is free to rotate. Put tranny in granny (cute, huh?) and go try
to manually turn the front tire. It should freely rotate forward but not
backward. Now go put tranny in reverse and again try to manually turn
the front tire. It should freely rotate backward, but not forward. If it
does not pass this test, you have to check the poppet valves in the top
of the tranny (remove transmission hump to access it) and check the
solenoid valve that is located on the front of the transfer case, right
above the driveline. Details of that to follow, once you've done the
first test. Good luck. Jim
