Why are ships and boats called "her" ?

Why are ships and boats called "her" ?

Prolly because they are so temperamental,
they always need guidance if they're "out",
they continuously require infusions of money and attention for upkeep,
they seem to just LOVE new coat of paint or clothes (sails),
you don't want them to sit still too long,
you have to pay close attention to taking care of their bottoms,
but most of all -
If you treat them REALLY right they'll take really good care of ya when the
going gets rough.

And BTW, as to HMS -- just remember that through most of history, they were
"His Majesty's Ships" not Her's.
