As one of those, I can tell you there are few things more annoying
than credit card cases. They are extremely labor intensive cases. I
personally had a credit card fraud. I knew exactly how it happened. I even
had two juveniles pulled off the plane as they landed in Sky Harbor coming
from Florida on a ticket I 'paid' for. I know it was a guy at Nextel who
swiped the info. Problem is getting the info from the various internet
companies. A court order from my state is not accepted in other states, so
you have to get someone in the company's home state to write a search
warrant in the case. This one case needed orders in MD, NV and CA. The
DA's office was no help. They weren't going to pay to extradite two
juveniles from CA. The companies involved won't help without the paperwork.
On the other hand, we had a CT gas utility bill paid with a local person's
credit card. No idea how they got it, but we dragged them back from CT and
will likely recover the money.
Other cases we had locals doing the frauds, but find a victim who wants to
travel hundreds of miles to testify in case after the credit card company
gave them their money back.
And you're right; credit card fraud is the way to go if you are a criminal.

Most of those Phishing sites are very well done clones of Ebay.
Why the government doesn't go after these jokers I don't know.
If you want to get involved in crime make sure you steal credit card
numbers as the cops never seem to pursue them. I had my card number
stolen from a transaction at Tractor supply years ago and everyone knew
it. The cops never were interested in pursuing it even though my card
had over 10K worth of merchandise charged to it before it was shut down.
After finding out where the crime originated, the credit card company
simply stopped pursuing it and wrote off the 10K as a loss.
I got a Ebay phishing email last week and just clicked the link and the
site is still up and running.
This kind of crap brings new meaning to "America - the land of opportunity".
