Everette is incorrect on a major point; the steamer "California", sunk in 1917 off the Irish coast was a BRITISH Anchor Liner ship

I was mistaken -- took "SS" to mean was a "US" ship - see following for
details on SS California

- by the way there was an earlier SS California, -side wheel steamer -
built and launched 1872 - same owners - scrapped 1904

see picture of one that was sunk by "U" boat

[MV] history - WWI 1917 German sub sinks U.S. passenger ship California

It may be worth mentioning to everyone that Everette is incorrect on a
major
point; the steamer "California", sunk in 1917 off the Irish coast was a
BRITISH Anchor Liner ship and had nothing to do with the US.
