        I still have some of my inert training aids. And yes they ARE inert.
M118 40mm HE for the M79 is 4 inches. (hi/low propulsion case
w/projectile)

        40mm Bofors projectile w/proximity fuze is 6 inches. (trivia: proximity
fuze was largely developed by Eastman Kodak Company in 1942)

        Most likely it was a percussion element fuze attached to the projectile.
  The slamming of this ert fuze on the table caused the detonator pin to
break loose and strike a very old and unstable primer. Chain reaction
followed.
