I had a similar problem on a CJ-5 (carb is pretty similar). The needle
seat
actually would not seat (go up) because of debris. Because of this, even
if the float was at the right level, the fuel pump continued to supply fuel
to the carb because the float couldn't shut off the fuel supply. This
sounds
like the same problem. You could probably get away with just taking off
the bowl cover and cleaning the needle valve (without taking the carb off
the
car). But it might be worth it to rebuild the whole thing.
