Hope you guys don't mind a comment from one of the girls.
My GPW had the same affliction. Getting ready to go to a parade one Sunday
morning, the fuel started puking out of the carb and it wouldn't idle worth a
darn. It also made me very nervous since the carb is right over the exhaust
manifold!

We decided to bite the bullet and pull it apart then and there. We found
some "crud" in the bowl and also some in the needle that controls the float.
We have since installed an in-line fuel filter and the intermittant problem
seems to have vanished.

Check for dirt in the carb. Change the filter. If you rebuild the carb, be
very careful with the replacement parts. On mine, some of the jets included
with the kit were incorrect. It ran better when I replaced the old jets!
Let us know what you find
